“Thousands of people gathered at the Potocari memorial centre in the eastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica to mark the anniversary of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide on Wednesday.

Commemoration organizing committee chief Nermin Alivukovic said at the ceremony that Srebrenica has become a planetary symbol of genocide. “We know who committed it and they have been sentenced. The victims of Srebrenica warn us that genocide must never happen to anyone ever again,” he said.

Families and friends of the 35 victims whose remains have been identified by forensic experts over the past year gathered at the Srebrenica Memorial Centre in Potocari to bury their loved ones. This year’s was the smallest funeral to date at the memorial grounds cemetry which is the final resting place for more than 6,000 victims whose remains have been found and identified throughout the years.

Remains identified by forensic experts are interred once a year at the anniversary commemoration.

On July 11, 1995, Bosnian Serb forces overran the eastern Bosnian enclave and rounded up the town’s Muslim Bosniaks, separated men from women and little children and systematically executed some 8,000 men and boys. The bodies of the victims were buried in a large number of mass graves. Forensic experts excavated them and identified the bones through DNA analysis before returning the bodies to the families for interrment on July 11 at the Memorial Centre’s cemetery.” (N1)
